I use Gmail and barely sign on using my computer, but after clearing the cache of Google Chrome, I got logged out from all my accounts. I successfully signed back in from all my accounts except one, my Gmail account. I have had that email for a long time but for some reason, Google is not allowing me to sign in unless I give my phone number.

Verify it’s you

Verify it’s you

To help keep your account safe, Google wants to make sure it’s really you trying to sign in

Enter a phone number to get a text message with a verification code.

After providing my phone number and clicking next, I receive this message:

Can’t sign you in

Can’t sign you in

You can’t recover your account at this time because Google
doesn’t have enough info to be sure this account is yours.
If you want to create a new account to use Google’s
services, be sure to add a recovery phone or email address
and keep them up to date.

Why can’t I sign in to my computer? I still have access to my Gmail on my iPhone, but it seems like I got temporarily locked out from signing in from my PC.

Does Google really need my phone number? I got a new phone so the phone number that Google has from my Gmail no longer exists. Is that the reason why I couldn’t sign in?

I eventually am able to sign back in a couple of weeks later.

Locked Out of Your Gmail Account? Here’s What to Do!

Getting locked out of your Gmail account can be frustrating, but it’s essential to take the necessary steps to recover your account. Let’s break down the possible reasons for the issue you experienced, and what you can do to fix it.

Firstly, clearing the cache of your browser should not have affected your ability to log in to your Gmail account unless you also cleared your browser cookies, which would have removed your saved login credentials. It’s possible that you mistyped your password or username while trying to log in, so double-check to ensure you’re entering the correct information.

Regarding the phone number verification step, it’s a common security measure used by Google to prevent unauthorized access to your account. The phone number you provided serves as a recovery method that allows you to regain access to your account if you forget your password or get locked out. If you have changed your phone number, it’s crucial to update your recovery information promptly.

Now, coming to the reason why you couldn’t sign in to your account even after providing your phone number. It’s possible that Google was not able to verify your identity using the information you provided, and this is why you received the error message. If you have not provided enough information to prove your ownership of the account, you may need to provide additional information, such as a backup email address, to regain access.

If you are still unable to access your account, you can try contacting Google’s support team for further assistance. You may need to provide additional information, such as your account creation date, recent login locations, and previous passwords, to verify your ownership of the account.
